A fresh row has evolved over billions of shillings sent to private universities to cater for the state-funded students as the academic staff union united the list of those rejecting the move.
The UASU said lecture halls in public universities have persisted empty as the government sent financial support to students registered in private institutions.
And now, academic staff want this funding still and money channelled to public universities, a change they said will go a long way in soothing the institutions.
In addition to this, the Union also requests government to review funding to ease proper payment of their members.
The details arised during a media meeting on Friday by UASU officials directed by Secretary General Constantine Wasonga.
The briefing was apprehended after the union’s National Executive Committee meeting.
UASU also issued a 7-day strike notice to Egerton University to restart full pay of lecturers, which has currently been pegged at 57%.
Constantine Wasonga said that as a union, we have resolved that we are not going to relax and watch our contemporaries from Egerton University continue to earn 57% of salaries due to them.
The report over billions sent to private universities will however kindle fresh debate as academic work now join the management of public universities and some Members of Parliament who have also amenably opposed the inventiveness.
He also said that it is upon the government to now account the universities adequately so that the perpetual problems of non-implementation of their CBA and non-remittance of constitutional deductions are eradicated.
