RE: MULTI – COUNTY CHOLERA OUTBREAK ALERT.
The ministry of health has confirmed a cholera outbreak in 6 counties.
The counties include; Kajiado, Nakuru, Kiambu, Muranga, Uasin Gishu and Nairobi following a wedding festival that was held in Kiambu county.
Of the 61 cases already, 13 are now hospitalized, 8 have been discharged while 40 were treated as outpatients.
The National public health Microbiology Laboratory has isolated Vibro-Cholera as the responsible serotype.
In response to this, the County department of health of the affected counties, the FELTP and the DDSR have commenced response activities.
The responses include; laboratory testing, community engagement, field investigation, risk communication, enhanced surveillance and environmental sanitation to prevent further spread of the disease and manage the outbreak.
However, the ongoing drought situation in the country may deteriorate the outbreak.
Therefore, is the ministry’s decision to pull all counties on high aware for possible cholera outbreaks.
