Primary headteachers start to admit posted JSS interns
The Junior Secondary School (JSS) internship programme, which was launched by the Ministry of Education in July, has finally kicked off in various schools across the country. The programme aims to provide JSS graduates with practical skills and exposure to the teaching profession, as well as to address the shortage of qualified teachers in some rural areas.
According to the programme coordinator, Mr. Samuel Osei, over 10,000 JSS interns have been posted to primary schools in all 16 regions of Ghana. He said that the interns will undergo a two-week orientation and training session before they start assisting the primary school teachers in various subjects.
Mr. Osei also said that the interns will receive a monthly allowance of GH₵200 and will be supervised and mentored by the headteachers and senior teachers of their assigned schools. He added that the programme will run for one academic year and will be evaluated at the end to determine its impact and sustainability.
Some of the primary headteachers who have received their JSS interns expressed their satisfaction and appreciation for the initiative. They said that the interns will help them cope with the large class sizes and improve the quality of education for their pupils. They also pledged to support and guide the interns to make their experience rewarding and beneficial.
The JSS interns, on the other hand, expressed their excitement and readiness to learn from their mentors and contribute to the development of their communities. They said that they hope to gain valuable skills and knowledge that will prepare them for further education or employment opportunities in the future.
